How to pre plan for a home move?

Moving takes a lot of planning to make sure the entire process goes smoothly. But did you know that it should also incorporate pre-planning?

By pre-planning, we don’t just mean planning really far in advance. The term “pre-planning” usually means that there will be another round of planning which will take place. You might also consider pre-planning as troubleshooting which takes place before you start laying out the plans.

Pre-planning is very important for a move by pre-planning wisely, you can actually make the next round of planning much easier. Here we have included the primary aspects of your move which should be pre-planned.

Moving budget
Always start with your moving budget as this is going to affect a lot of the other aspects you need to pre-plan for your move. It is best to make a budget range instead of a fixed budget goal. By having a budget range, it will give you more flexibility to make decisions later on like whether it is more important to save money by choosing a DIY move with a rental truck, or whether you are okay going higher in your budget range but making life easier by choosing a professional moving company.

Moving season
Narrow down which season you want to move. This is very important because you may have to plan your move differently depending on the season. For example, if you choose to move in winter, then you will have to plan for things like snow removal and heating your new home before you arrive.

Moving date
After you’ve narrowed down the season, now you’ve got to narrow down your moving dates. You don’t have to choose an exact moving date yet, but you should pre-plan as to whether you will be able to do a mid-week move (which is often cheaper than a weekend move) or whether you must move during the end of the month (which tends to be more expensive than a mid-month move).

Moving method
Carefully weigh the pros and cons of DIY moves and professional moves. If budget is the primary concern, then a DIY move may be the only option. But DIY moves have many hassles, and many additional expenses like providing food and beverages for friends who help, gas costs, parking, and your time.

How you will get rid of unwanted items
Don’t start sorting through your items until you have a plan about what you will do with them. Contact charities to see which items they take, whether they will do a home collection, and whether they are tax deductible also decide whether it is worth it to go through the trouble of having a garage sale, or listing items on sites like eBay to sell.

Make your moving binder
Be sure you get a binder where you can keep everything related to the move. This is where all of your moving checklists, receipts, contact numbers, and other info will be kept so you can stay organized.
